Quick Introduction
Ernst van Nierop, PhD candidate in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University, in Prof. Howard Stone's group.
Previously, I studied Applied Physics (MSc) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands (I am Dutch), focusing on two-phase flow. Following graduation from Prof. Detlef Lohse's group in Twente, I went on to become a process engineer for the membrane electrolysis plant of Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals in Rotterdam. Although that was a great experience, I could not resist the opportunity to come to Cambridge MA when that opportunity came along. Most of my current PhD work involves the concept of surface tension, although I also did some work recently on the aerodynamics of humpback whale flippers which has applications in e.g. the design of wind turbine blades. You can find more about my old and current work under "My work".
Apart from my more fundamental PhD work on fluid mechanics, I am interested in all things related to energy: generation, distribution, end-use, business, and policy. To learn more about the science and technology of these topics, I co-founded the Harvard Energy Journal Club with Kurt House and Jeff Bielicki.
Whilst at Harvard, I also co-founded the Dutch Cultural Society. Check out the links page for more info on the various clubs.
In my spare time, I enjoy many many things, including gliding and photography. Check out the pictures page for some more examples of that.
