Music of the Molecules
To demonstrate the physical principles of molecular spectroscopy, it can be helpful to make analogies. One of my favourite analogies is with sound waves. The five images below show IR spectra of molecules with a sound file underneath. In each case, you'll hear the Fourier transform of the IR spectrum of that molecule. The scaling used is very simple: inverse cm for EM radiation converts directly to Hz for sound. This idea was developed for the course GENED 1184. If you're inspired to use it for other purposes, we'd love to hear about it!
